GUIDE FOR CITIZENSHIP

The process of citizenship acquisition is guided by Fijian Citizenship Act 2009 that came into force on 10 April 2009.

Fijian Citizenship maybe acquired by:

1. BIRTH

a. Every child born in Fiji on or after the commencement date becomes a citizen at the date of birth unless, at the date of birth:

i.    A parent of the child has the diplomatic immunity accorded to envoys of sovereign foreign power accredited to Fiji; and

ii.   Neither parent is a citizen.

b. An infant found abandoned in Fiji is deemed to have been born in Fiji in the absence of proof to the contrary.

2. REGISTRATION

a. REGISTRATION OF MINOR

i.    A child born outside Fiji may become a citizen by registration on or after commencement date if, at the time of child’s birth, either parent was a citizen.

ii.   A foreign child adopted by a citizen when the child was under the age of 18 may become a citizen by registration.

iii.  A child who was under the age of 18 when either parent became a citizen may become a citizen by registration.

iv.  An application for registration made by the child concerned after he or she has reached the age of 18 must not be granted unless he or she has been lawfully present in Fiji for a total of 3 out of 5 years immediately before application is lodged.

                        

b. REGISTRATION FORMER FIJI CITIZEN

i.   Former Fiji Citizens who have become naturalised citizens of another country can apply for Fiji Citizenship.

ii.   A person who has acquired citizenship of one or more countries is not restricted from applying and being granted Fiji Citizenship by Registration.

iii.  For those who acquire Citizenship through Registration are issued with a Fijian Citizenship Certificate. A Fijian Citizenship Certificate is an official document that shows a person is a Fijian. You can get a certificate if you meet the Citizenship acquisition requirements.

 

DUAL CITIZENSHIP

Under the Citizenship Act, you can be both a Fijian citizen and a citizen of another country. However, some countries won’t let you keep their citizenship if you become a Fijian Citizen. The consulate, embassy or immigration office of your other country of citizenship can tell you whether this applies to you.
